Does using THAT accessory at home help you focus? Understand if new trend really works

New TikTok trend recommends that people with ADHD use a specific accessory to gain focus during the home office. But will it really work?

Do you feel a difference in focus when you’re working from home and when you go to the company? With the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of remote jobs has grown significantly and, as a result, many people have had their routine adapted to fit into home office models.

Despite being an attractive format for some people, others found it more difficult to keep their productivity up to date. That’s because some distractions can be more frequent at home, even more so when you share the environment with family or friends.

In this way, a series of tips to stay focused during the home office have been shared on the internet – and one of them has drawn attention: wear running shoes. The trend, which became popular in the TikTokclaims that wearing shoes helps keep the brain more focused – especially in people with ADHD.

How does this happen?

Many people believe that there is a psychological explanation for this. Just as it is advised not to wear pajamas during remote work, wearing sneakers would also be a way to stimulate the mind to be more focused.

This is because the brain associates clothing with situations in which the body is active and productive, such as during physical activity. Thus, theoretically, it would create a mental stimulation to perform tasks accurately.

Does it really work?

Despite the trend offering this alternative for patients with focus problems, there is no scientific evidence that the method actually works. Wanderley Cerqueira de Lima, neurosurgeon and neurologist, explains that there are other ways to increase your ability to concentrate.

“What we see in patients with attention deficit would be an increase in focus when they have a sports practice. And the activities that require concentration are usually those individual sports, like playing tennis and running, and some collective sports that focus on the group – always with the supervision of a coach”, he says.

According to the doctor, the so-called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with psychologists or neuropsychologists is also recommended.

“So, from a scientific point of view, with techniques and evaluations, patients learn discipline and focus. So, there are no tricks, there are no magic – there is the performance of a professional with the use of cognitive behavioral therapy”, says Wanderley.
